Driver Attention Alert Systems Market Outlook (2023 to 2033)
These systems are safety systems meant to monitor a driver’s actions and warn them when they seem distracted from their path and likely to lose situational awareness in driving duration.
At any given time, a driver may be involved in one or more distracted driving practices. The end outcome is always an increased chance of collision, harm, or even death. There is little doubt that distracted driving is one of the contemporary risks to safe driving that is contributing to the increase in collisions in the US. Almost 70% of collisions involving commercial fleets include distracted drivers, and nearly 95% of serious traffic collisions are the result of human error.
These systems alert drivers before the collision happens and help avoid a collision. This improves driving and in the case of new drivers, this is even more effective. The rising concern for safety and assistance is increasing these systems. The systems are designed to identify signs of driver fatigue, eye movement, and camera-based facial expression.
What are the factors impelling growth in the market?
The growing penetration of electronic devices and the adoption of advanced safety technologies in the automotive industry is fuelling the growth. Various methods have been developed for tracking alertness. Vendors provide multiple sensors to detect the activity of drivers, cameras to capture, and smart wearable gadgets to record body parameters like temperature, stress level, and heartbeat. Vendors in this market are highly focused on research and development to offer unique and advanced technology in the competitive market.
The seats are installed with piezoelectric sensors to measure a driver’s stress level and heartbeat. Audi introduced a rider alert system known as Fit Driver. Fit Driver system works when the driver wears a fitness band, which monitors parameters like body temperature and heartbeat rate. The data is then supplemented with others like driving style and brakes applied. Analyzed data alerts the driver to stop the vehicle or slow down.
A leading sensor technology company Plessey, partnered with Segula Technologies, a leading engineering specialist, to develop a heart-rate-based system. Some of the leading OEM’s are Driver Alert (by Ford), Driver Monitoring System (by Toyota), Attention Assist (by Mercedes-Benz), Driver Alert Control (by Volvo) and Fatigue Detection System (by Volkswagen). Several developments in this system, with reference to technology, the proliferating growth rate of the market, along with the recent developments and innovations are expected to drive the global market during the forecast period.
What are the challenges in implementation that may deter the growth in the market?
Many alert systems require video to upload before analysis. This time lag, or latency, resulting from data transmission from the vehicle to the cloud and back again prevents real-time alerting. This means the driver doesn’t get a chance to act in time to prevent the incident, and worse, the supervisor knows something has happened even before the driver does. Apart from these driver’s privacy is also an issue with these systems.
Recent Development
- For instance, Magna Solution unveiled a camera-based monitoring system that tracks a driver's eye gaze and assesses their level of tiredness and attention. Similar to this, the car business Harman created an eye monitoring system with a camera and eye tracking software to measure driver alertness and prevent accidents.
- Delphi unveiled a touch-free cockpit and 3D instrument cluster as part of their driver alert system. These systems from Delphi track what the driver is looking at and tracks eye movement using a covert infrared camera. This system improves the driving experience through the use of multi-layer graphics technology.
- Other providers such as Omron, developed a prototype facial recognition system using an infrared camera to track the drivers and eye movement. When Omron’s system detects no response from the driver to any warning signal, it automatically slows down the car.
- Faurecia another software company introduced a driver alert system called Active Wellness. It uses a car seat that detects the driver’s stress level. This solution was developed by Faurecia in cooperation with Stanford University.
Region-wise Insights
The market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, South East Asia (SEA), China, Japan, and Middle East & Africa. Presently, North America holds the largest market share of the market because of the high adoption rate of advanced technology by end consumers. Western Europe and SEA are also significantly adopting these systems and will be the potential market during the forecast period.
Segment wise Insights
The systems market is segmented based on sales channels named OEMs and aftermarkets. OEMs are expected to have a major market share during the forecast period as there is increased penetration in luxury and mid-segment passenger cars.
However, the aftermarket segment is also expected to have high growth during the forecast period. These systems are segmented based on vehicle types such as passenger car, light commercial vehicles, and heavy commercial vehicles. Passenger cars are expected to have a major market share during the forecast period due to large production when compared to commercial vehicles.
