How has COVID-19 Impacted Ceramic Tiles Demand in Europe

06 May 2021

Novel coronavirus pandemic has left the global economy struggling hard as it witnessed the worst recession after the Second World War. The spread of Covid-19 crisis reduced the demand for Ceramic Tiles in 2020 across Europe due to lockdown and trade barriers imposed on production and supply of goods and services. European regions manufacture high quality ceramic tiles owing to the demand from infrastructural industries. According to a research conducted by ceramica.info, the European economy was one of the worst hit economies in 2020, with GDP falling by 7.3% followed by a 4.9% rebound in 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic also led to the cancellation and postponement of various residential and construction projects, residential investments, new installation activities, industrial investments across the Western European region. The recovery of the construction sector is further delayed followed by the slump in employment. This has also led to a decrease in investments by 12% in 2020, as per the report. Germany’s construction sector was released from the lockdown rules and so it witnessed a very limited fall in investments. This also led to the gradual economic recovery in Germany during the second half of 2020.

France and Spain witnessed a sharp drop in the number of residential construction investments. This is also the reason why these two European nations will not adequately recover and grow in the second half of 2020. In Central and Eastern Europe, the decline in investments in 2020 impacted massively. Now in 2021, the restrictions have been relieved to uplift global economic conditions. Large manufacturing companies are consistently trying to get back to their earlier positions and recover antecedent losses through the technological advancements and development of better and highly advanced ceramic tiles.

Leading corporations including Mohawk Industries, Inc., Siam Cement Group, Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Ceramics, Grupo Lamosa, Kajaria Ceramics, China Ceramics Co. Ltd., LASSELSBERGER GmbH, Panariagroup Industrie Ceramiche S.p.A., Gruppo Concorde S.p.A., Johnson Tiles, and Kale Group and others are adopting business strategies such as sales contracts, strategic alliances, acquiring technical expertise, product approvals, patents and events, joint ventures, partnership agreements, collaborations, digital marketing, mergers and acquisitions, capacity utilisations, technological advancements etc to lead the global market for ceramic tiles.
