5 Countries with Highest Motorcycle Sales

06 May 2021

Global motorcycle sales continue to go through a period of bust-and-boom. The COVID-19 induced slowdown has impacted motorcycle sales in various countries.

Use of motorcycles varies across countries – while in the west, they are more of a hobby, they are integral to personal commute in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Below are 5 countries that consistently record high sales of motorcycles.

  • Thailand

Thailand is known as “the land of 100 million scooters” for a genuine reason. The streets and parkings across Thailand are full of differently designed motorcycles. A study conducted by Pew Research Center, more than 87% of the households in Thailand own at least one motorcycle.

  • China

According to a research conducted by motorcycle chapter of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM Motorcycle), China’s motorcycle sales in 2020 kept rising month after month. The market recovered from the losses suffered due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and steady sales were witnessed thereafter. However, as the world is still facing the waves of coronavirus, the exports of motorcycles from China are witnessing a downfall owing to the falling economies around the world.

  • India

For Indians, motorcycles serve as the easiest way to navigate from one place to another owing to the massive middle class population. The spread of Covid-19 crisis reduced the demand for motorcycles in the first half of 2020 due to lockdown and trade barriers imposed on production and supply of goods and services. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), motorcycle sales improved across the Indian Subcontinent in October 2020 with the arrival of the festive season. All the top selling brands in the country, witnessed immense growth by the end of March 2021.

  • Germany

According to the reports, Germany held a high pace and registered more than 220,000 motorcycle sales in 2020. The country did not go through a total lockdown during the novel coronavirus pandemic which helped in maintaining the pace of the industry growth. The sales are increasing in the country owing to the increasing motor sports and disposable incomes.

  • Indonesia

Though the country suffered massive losses in the year 2020 because of the lockdown and trade barriers imposed on production and supply, the country still holds a good place in the global market. Now in 2021, the restrictions have been relieved to uplift global economic conditions. Large manufacturing companies are consistently trying to get back to their earlier positions and recover antecedent losses through the technological advancements and development of better and highly advanced motorcycles. The entire two wheeler market is working towards innovating their products and improving sales in 2021.
