Rockville, Md. The global market for automotive ignition systems is set to grow from US$ 5.3 Bn in 2017 to more than US$ 7 Bn by the end of 2022, according to Fact.MR. By channel, OEM is the largest outlet, worth roughly US$ 3.2 Bn in 2017 as most systems are fitted during vehicle assembly. Around six in ten ignition systems sold over the period are used in gasoline engines, a reminder that combustion still underpins much of the demand even as the market prepares for a shift.
The pull toward electric and hybrid vehicles is the strongest force at work, prompting suppliers to redirect development from conventional ignition to electric ignition. Over time, advances adopted by OEMs during production could bring system costs down. Working against that momentum is the gradual loss of traction for fossil fuel engines, which is expected to hold back growth to a degree even as the broader market advances.
